With an initial staff of 14, BRC West Indies Limited started manufacturing Welded Wire Mesh for concrete reinforcement in February of 1980. The company has since expanded its product range to include Weldmesh (galvanized and plain),
Brickforce, Straight and Cut & Bent Reinforcing Steel Bars (deformed high yield and smooth mild steel), three profiles of “screw-through” Corrugated Steel Roof Cladding, two profiles of Standing Seam Roofing Systems and Hurricane Straps.
BRC has proven itself to be one of the leading companies
in the field of construction steel, with a reputation for high
quality products and services. Quality control is constantly
monitored in-house, and also by the Barbados National
Standards Institute (BNSI) as appropriate, to ensure continued
compliance with the relevant working standards.
 |
The company’s drive for quality is
reflected in the numerous awards which it has received
over the years. These include being the first company to
be granted a licence to use the BNSI certification mark
for the production of consistently high quality products.
A sixteen time winner of varied BIDC National Industrial
Awards for Local Business, Building and Engineering,
Fabricated Steel Products, Quality Control, Occupational
Health & Safety, Employment, Innovation and Productivity. |
In 1995, BRC was one of three companies in Barbados to be
approved by the Buy Caribbean National Committee to use
its logo on Welded Wiremesh, Rebar and Rollformed
products, certifying the manufacture of authentic
Caribbean products.
|
BRC's reputation for quality extends
throughout the CARICOM region with its export market
reaching from as far north as Belize to Guyana in the
south. The company has also made Contributions to the
academic community through school adoption programs,
sponsorship of primary school quiz competitions, provision
of mandatory work experience for Polytechnic students in
Mechanical Plant Engineering, and in acknowledging their
top Agricultural Students, and in providing university
project funding.

|
From its inception, BRC has sought
to keep pace in a continuously evolving industry, through being
informed and innovative. The earlier products such as BRC's
high tensile and mild Reinforcing Steel Bars have stood the
test of time, forming an integral part of building construction:
in foundations, slabs, columns and beams.
|
The introduction of BRC Brickforce provided horizontal reinforcement
for concrete blockwork and promoted the erection of walls
with greater binding power and fewer cracks.
In roof cladding, BRC introduced an on-line system which featured
custom sheet lengths. This carried such benefits as the virtual
elimination of sheet laps (hence areas susceptible to rusting),
faster & easier installations and much reduced costs due
to more efficient material utilisation. The company’s, installation
service also made it possible for the home owner to have a
new roof completely fitted or changed in a short time period.

|
|
In 1995, BRC made the transition
to producing its Welded Wire Mesh solely in flat sheets, recognising
that the straightening and placement of mesh rolls can be very
time consuming and labour intensive. This allowed for more effective
placement in reinforced-concrete slabs and provided a more cost
effective product. In 1996, BRC made a further contribution
to the fortification of building construction when it began
production of a variety of Hurricane Anchors, Ties and Clips. |
November 2002 saw a diversification of the company’s roofing
products line when Permalock and Permaseam Standing Seam Systems
were introduced into the market. These roofing systems addressed
the major modes of metal roof corrosion failure and featured
concealed fasteners, minimized visible cut edges, a thicker
standard gauge and a wider choice of colours and materials.
In 2003, BRC fortified its Rebar production capabilities when
it invested in a machine to manufacture Cut & Bent Steel
and Stirrups; formerly a service not readily available to the
general public and often imported by large contractors. Throughout
the local community, BRC's products have manifested their versatility,
finding a wide range of applications: in fencing & security,
storage, industry, festivals, agriculture, environmental protection
and home gardening |
As specialists in reinforcement, BRC seeks not only to provide
our nation with a firm building foundation, but offers a
product range which contributes significantly to the
reinforcing of each elementary phase of building construction.
